Just five years ago, direct drive wheels were almost unattainable for the average sim racer. Entry-level models often started around $1,000\u2014<\/span>before<\/span><\/i> you even added a rim, pedals, or a rig. That all changed in 2021 when Fanatec released the CSL DD, ushering in a new era of affordable, high-quality direct drive wheelbases.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now in 2025, sim racers have more choices than ever. But what are the cheapest direct drive ecosystems in 2025, and are these entry-level options actually worth your money?<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Moza: Budget Champion<\/b><\/h3>\n

Moza currently leads the pack for budget-conscious sim racers with the <\/span>R3<\/b> and <\/span>R5<\/b> wheelbases. The <\/span>Moza R3<\/b> is especially\u00a0 impressive: at just <\/span>$299 (PC version)<\/b>, it includes a rim and a basic pedal set. Despite its compact size, it delivers a respectable <\/span>3.9 Nm<\/b> of torque and features Moza\u2019s excellent NRG-style quick release, offering full compatibility with their entire ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s also an <\/span>Xbox-compatible R3 bundle<\/b> available for <\/span>$399<\/b> (or on sale for <\/span>$359<\/b>), which is a fantastic entry point when you consider it\u2019s $100 less than just the <\/span>5 Nm CSL DD base<\/b> alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Cammus: The Wild Card<\/b><\/h3>\n

Cammus is a lesser-known player, but their <\/span>C5 direct drive bundle<\/b> makes waves with an aggressive price of <\/span>$329<\/b> and <\/span>5 Nm of torque<\/b>. It includes a rim and a basic pedal set. While the pedals look minimal and don\u2019t support a clutch add-on like Moza\u2019s R3, they\u2019re likely sufficient for casual sim racers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The downside? No console support and a smaller ecosystem. Still, for PC users who want a plug-and-play DD experience without plans to upgrade, the <\/span>C5 is worth considering<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Thrustmaster: A Return to Relevance<\/b><\/h3>\n

After years stuck with aging belt-drive wheels, Thrustmaster returned to the spotlight with the <\/span>T818<\/b> and, more recently, the\u00a0 <\/span>T598<\/b>. Priced at <\/span>$499<\/b>, the T598 bundle includes everything you need to get started: a rim, pedals, and a wheelbase delivering <\/span>5 Nm sustained torque<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The T598 is <\/span>PlayStation compatible<\/b>, a huge plus at this price point. It also supports Thrustmaster\u2019s new ecosystem of DD-compatible rims and existing accessories. Bonus points for the included pedal set, which can be upgraded with a <\/span>load cell<\/b> brake mod\u2014no need to replace the entire set to upgrade later.<\/span><\/p>\n

One advantage Thrustmaster still holds is <\/span>retail availability<\/b>. Their products are often found in big-box stores, and discounts are common during sales.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Fanatec: Still Solid, But No Longer the Budget Leader\"Fanatec's<\/a><\/b><\/h3>\n

Once the go-to for budget DD racing, <\/span>Fanatec’s CSL DD<\/b> has become less competitive in North America due to price increases. The <\/span>5 Nm Ready2Race bundle<\/b> now starts at <\/span>$599<\/b>, which puts it higher than much of the competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the <\/span>European price<\/b> is still attractive at <\/span>\u20ac399<\/b>, and the <\/span>Boost Kit 180<\/b> allows users to upgrade from <\/span>5 Nm to 8 Nm<\/b> later. That flexibility is a big plus, though the <\/span>$179.99<\/b> price tag on the Boost Kit is steep.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CSL DD Ready2Race bundle includes an Xbox-compatible wheel, solid <\/span>QR2<\/b> quick release, and <\/span>CSL pedals<\/b> with upgrade potential, making it a long-term investment\u2014just not the most affordable one anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Simagic: High-End Power at Entry-Level Prices\"Simagic<\/a><\/b><\/h3>\n

While not strictly a budget option, Simagic\u2019s new <\/span>Alpha Evo Sport<\/b> deserves a mention. For <\/span>$648<\/b> (with the GT Neo rim), it delivers a whopping <\/span>9 Nm of sustained torque<\/b>, putting it well above the other options on this list in terms of raw performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, it comes with trade-offs:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • No desk clamp (rig or stand required)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Still, for serious PC racers, the <\/span>Alpha Evo Sport<\/b> offers unmatched value in terms of feel and power. Simagic\u2019s <\/span>P1000 2-pedal load cell set<\/b> starts at <\/span>$149<\/b>, with a clutch upgrade for <\/span>$59<\/b>. It\u2019s not cheap, but it\u2019s very high quality and won\u2019t need replacing <\/span>anytime soon.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t
